Brecon Beacons Pictures

Raw Black and White files ready for editing, will shoot for another couple of days and get back to editing when the bad weather comes!!!
Taking Brecon Beacons Pictures...

So far on my Brecon Beacons National Park project I have been concentrating on the waterfalls. At this time of year the trees are just starting to shed the leaves making for very mystical scenes. We have come across some amazing sights already this season, very inspiring times.

I love being a Fine Art Landscape photographer when I have adventures like I have had so far over the last couple of days, clambering up the side of a 30 foot waterall for an awesome shot, nearly loosing my camera bag down a gorge as I only had a couple of feet to work with and the smile on my face standing behind Sgwd yr Eira was truly amazing!!! Really looking forward to photographing the national park right the way through this Autumn and Winter - Dartmoor National Park next week though...

Black and White Photographer of the year 2012

Craig Howarth Fine Art Landscape Photographer's entries to BPOTY 2012
Black and White Photographer of the year
My entries have now gone off for Black and White Photographer of the year 2012, I have entered the main category and living world, exciting times waiting to hear the results now!

One of the images above is titled Gloss, which was captured last Autumn at the Brecon Beacons National Park in heavy rain. I'm hoping that I will be presented with simular conditions this week while working in the park again, we have amber flood warnings at the moment so hoping to have very full rivers and powerful waterfalls this week. Which will make for more stunning images, to see the image Gloss larger please click here.

Alps in Autumn - Morzine - Pointe de Ressachaux

Alps in Autumn, Black and White Landscape Photographer Craig Howarth
Alps in Autumn - The Alps in Autumn are just stunning, the colours the textures the lighting are all truly inspiring for any Black and White Landscape Photographer. This image was taken on a day hike in Morzine where we climbed to the summit of Pointe de Ressachaux that looks back on Morzine, a hard climb but truly worth it.

When you are out this autumn, look not only for the great views but also the different textures this seasons brings, with the leaves falling to the ground and remember the harsh frosts can bring pieces of stunning bark off the trees, providing excellent opportunities for abstract photographs.

Black & White Landscape Photography

Black & White Landscape Photography, Pen Y fan, Brecon Beacons National Park

Black & White Landscape Photography - Autumn starts...

With autumn starting tomorrow, I like many other landscape photographers are excited for the prospects of that perfect lighting at dawn and dusk, and pretty spectacular lighting conditions throughout the day. It’s my favorite time of year to be traveling through the mountains of Scotland and Wales.

I will be working on my Natural Scenes project next week in the Brecon Beacons National Park, hoping for some spectacular weather conditions to get stunning images of the black mountain range. Whilst in the Welsh mountains I will also be filming my latest Video Tutorial of the Zone System and importance of understanding exposure.

Inspired by the sea - Slapton Sands

Slapton Sands Torcross, by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer

Slapton Sands Torcross
Image Title: Ethereal Mist
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image was taken at dawn, when there was just me and a fishing trawler at Torcross. This makes me feel very special as we were both out there doing what we love, makes me feel like I'm feeding my soul as an artist. Great to experience such freedom and passion.

The lighting was perfect to give the sheen on the pebbles I had been trying to gain on previous visits. The sea was gently lapping at the shoreline just enough for me to get these nice deep grey tones at the top right of the image, and the bright highlights of the moving foam which looks like sea mist. The image was appropriately named "Ethereal Mist".

Slapton Sands Torcross Dartmouth

Slapton Sands, by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer Craig Howarth

Slapton Sands Torcross
Image Title: The Wash Two
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

I often get asked how well timed my shots look and how close I must have got to the action. Well as this image shows I do actually like to get very involved in making my images.

This storm energised wave engulfed me and my tripod, to such an extent it did look like I was actually out at sea for a couple of seconds. Luckily my camera kit bag was a way up on the pebbles away from me!

The Wash Two is part of a series of images from that powerful and dramatic day, The Surf 2  and The Wash can be viewed by following these links.

Kingswear from Dartmouth - Inspired by the Sea

Still Waters, by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer

Kingswear from Dartmouth
Image Title: Still Waters
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

Different from some of my recent work, as I have included many man made objects in this photograph of Kingswear, something I usually hike miles to get away from. However the lighting was so dramatic and the water was so still I couldn't resist getting this shot on a late spring afternoon, on my way back from Castle Cove, Dartmouth.

There is something very hypnotic about waiting for clouds to move into place sat at the waters edge, boats fenders rumbling as they softly impact each other moved by the changing tide.

Morzine in Winter

Fine Art Landscape Photographer Craig Howarth's control centre!!!

Morzine in Winter
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

It is very strange editing & finalising snow images from my last trip to the French Alps ( Morzine ) when here in Devon we are having our summer!!! Apparently 21 degrees at present, which is mind boggling after the July and August we had. Here I am, remembering avalanches and sub zeros temperatures that even tested my powerful reserve to the cold on this trip.

In between editing I have read a great article by Monty Halls ( http://www.montyhalls.co.uk/ ) about the Great Barrier Reef in one of the most inspiring magazines on sale Wanderlust...

What more could you ask for on a sunny Friday afternoon...

Thanks for reading, my winter images will be available sometime next month, in the meantime to view more of my Fine Art landscape photography please visit:

Blackpool Sands Dartmouth

Blackpool Sands Dartmouth by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer

Blackpool Sands
Image Title: Scatters
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image taken on Blackpool Sands in Dartmouth, on a day where the sea was showing us just how powerful it can be.

The beach was littered with sea debris, the order of which I found fascinating. The debris was strewn out over the beach but as I looked closer there was a strong sense of order with the way it had been placed. Clearly displaying to me that even in apparent disorder of the storm nature had still placed the items beautifully and orderly.

The stark contrast of a blue sky with such rough seas attracted me to this particular shot.

Slapton Sands Torcross Storms

Slapton Sands Torcross Storms -

Slapton Sands Torcross Storms
Image Title: The Surf 2
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This is the type of weather I'm so excited to see again hopefully this autumn. Stormy, dramatic and fast moving skies coupled with stunning rough seas. These are the conditions that really gets your heart pumping as you hear the waves crashing against the the tiny pebbles along the Slapton Sands beach.

I have spent most of this weekend finding new locations around Dartmouth, Castle Cove and then up to Little Dartmouth for my new collection of images. With the correct weather conditions,  and the official start to Autumn on 21st September I really can't wait to start shooting my new planned images!!! With a full moon on the 29th I think this will be the perfect time...

Slapton Sands Torcross Dartmouth

Slapton Sands, The One by Dartmouth Artist & Photographer Craig Howarth

Slapton Sands Torcross Dartmouth
Image Title: The One
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image was taken in early summer very early in the morning, the sun had hardly risen. We had experienced a very high tide that morning hence everything was still glistening from when the wash had been covering the rocks earlier. With the sun literally just appearing over the horizon, it highlighted the details and edges of the rocks just the way I had envisioned, truly beautiful.

The air was so clear and the beach and surf so still, really was one of those meditative experiences just perfect hence the title "The One".

Compass Cove Dartmouth

Compass Cove Dartmouth by Dartmouth Artist & Photographer

Compass Cove Dartmouth
Image Title: Leading
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image is part of my new collection "The Blue".

This image was a difficult image to capture, one I have tried to get many times. I wanted the rocks to be wet from the surf ( not rain ) but the waves gentle enough that they don't move the pebbles. This was a late spring evening and the perfect time, the tide was retreating but still giving a couple of powerful waves that glazed my rock perfectly. The late setting sun perfectly highlighting the shapes of the rocks to create this stunning image "Leading".

Blackpool Sands Dartmouth - Inspired by the Sea

Blackpool Sands Dartmouth,
by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer

Blackpool Sands Dartmouth
Image Title: Passage
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image was taken in very rough weather, the wind was high the waves were crashing against and over the headland rocks. What is normally a stream meeting the sea was a fast flowing, deep and powerful river.

As I was setting up the camera on the tripod the pebble bank on which I was standing was falling away, I knelt gently while I got the 45 second exposure shot. Just after a massive shelf of pebbles gave way, which leaves me feeling pretty lucky I got this fantastic shot, even with the moon in the sky!

Slapton Sands Torcross Dartmouth - Inspired by the sea

Slapton Sands Torcross, by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer
Slapton Sands Torcross
Image Title: The Wash
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image is part of my new collection "The Blue". After days of high winds and atrocious weather there was a break. Cloud formations were dramatic and I was drawn to Slapton Sands in Torcross, where the combination of the clouds and the sea's turbulent presence was breathtaking to say the least...

I setup to take a number of different shots settling on this one "The Wash" as being one of my most favourite images. As you can imagine the wave didn't stop coming towards me after it had painted beauty in my camera frame, it absolutely soaked me. Was all worth it though...

Compass Cove Dartmouth - Inspired by the sea

compass cove dartmouth
Compass Cove Dartmouth, by Dartmouth Fine Art Landscape Photographer
Compass Cove Dartmouth
Image Title: Guided
Fine Art Landscape Photographer: Craig Howarth

This image is part of my new collection "The Blue".

I captured this image after visiting  Compass Cove many times through the winter. The image was shot in early spring on an evening I didn't expect to be in the water so didn't have my wet weather footwear on. I didn't let that stop me and got my boots off and stood in the freezing early spring water!

I was not going to let this image get away from me, the evening light, the sheen of the rocks the depth of the shadows was truly breath taking. These are the emotions I still get when I look at this image even now.

Waiting for Sunrise

Waiting for the Sunrise at Castle Cove Dartmouth
Waiting for the Sunrise
Alarm goes of at 4:00am, you leave the house in the dark and head off to your location to see if today will be the sunrise, that will set apart from all the others you have seen. Recently, when I was endeavouring to capture one such sunrises on the Devon coast in Dartmouth, the Weather forecast the night before was perfect a couple of light clouds that usually add to the dramatic feel of most of my shots.

I arrive at my location at 4:45 and then start waiting for the sunrise, hoping everything will fall into place, exposure set on what I estimate it will be I relax and wait. As all Landscape photographers will know you are not always greeted with that outstanding display of nature you anticipated but one completely different. This was one of those occasions, what I thought would be a dramatic and inspiring sunrise was in fact a very stormy foreboding scene that excited me to capture the emotion this venue stirred in me. Always rewarding even waiting for the sunrise that didn’t unfold still enabled me to capture such a stunning displays of the force of nature.
